Project Reveal: Our Own Bathroom Remodel

Melissa Mathieu

For my latest project, I was both the designer and the client, which made the project extra special! My husband and I decided to remodel our own bathroom for a number of reasons, but mainly because we found mold in the space that we wanted to get rid of!

Although I already knew that it’s hard to be patient when going through a remodel, I have a newfound appreciation for all my clients who trust me with the designs of their projects and go through a remodel in their home! After designing the bathroom, I couldn’t wait until the selections and renderings became a reality in our home. Even though our main focus was removing the mold, we took advantage of the remodel to update every piece of this bathroom so we can enjoy it for years to come!

Before

Previously, the design of our bathroom was really outdated, and the space lacked functionality. We had a shower curtain, but water would always come out of the shower, which caused a mess and also contributed to the mold problem.

Although we had been wanting to make some serious improvements to this space, the mold issue was the key factor in inspiring us to move forward with the full remodel. As you can see in the photos of the space before the remodel, this bathroom was ready for a change!

Design Phase

When designing this space, I got to see a picture of what my clients go through when working with me as their interior designer. I asked my husband and myself what we wanted out of this remodel. What were the current issues? What was the design style we loved? What were we missing from a function perspective?

As we talked through these questions and more, we decided to remove the shower curtain and bring in a glass shower door. However, we didn’t have much of a clearance with an elongated toilet, so we switched to a round toilet. This created plenty of space to open the shower door and get in the shower, without hitting the toilet.

Once we nailed down the new layout and dimensions, we talked through the more exciting elements of design - paint colors, wallpaper, lighting, flooring, and decor. These are the pieces that really make the space come alive! I had so much fun sourcing all of the materials and selections for this space that would make it feel like us, while still creating a cohesive design from floor to ceiling.

The Reveal

As both the designer and the client, I’m happy to say that both parties are thrilled with the end result of this bathroom remodel! Even though I saw the progress that my husband made throughout the entire process, I am still amazed at the final photos. I love the design selections we decided on together and how it all came together to create a bathroom we will actually be proud to show to guests when we give home tours.

Additionally, we love knowing that the mold is gone and won’t be returning from the shower curtain letting water in anymore. As parents of a young one, we feel so much better about the mold being out of our home!

For the vanity, we selected this beautiful green, freestanding vanity from Home Depot with a White Carrara Marble Top. It came assembled, which made the install even easier!

Design tip for you: When selecting a thicker depth mirror, ensure there is enough clearance between the light fixture and the mirror if the light overlaps the mirror. This is an element that you wouldn’t realize until you’re ready to install the light fixture, and it would be very frustrating to find out there isn’t enough clearance at that point!

One of my favorite parts of this bathroom remodel was finding unique decor pieces to finish it out, including this beautiful brass antique bird hook from Etsy.

In the shower, we chose a polished porcelain shower wall tile that creates visual movement. Then, on the ceiling we selected a dark tile to contrast the lighter shower walls. We love how the black color on the ceiling ties in the shower head and handle!

For the floor, we chose a fun Hexagon Floor Tile that is neutral but adds some fun dimension to the space! If you have been following me for any amount of time, you probably already know how much I love wallpaper and the impact it has in a home. I love this soft floral wallpaper we chose for one of the walls in the bathroom!
